While Phil takes a well earned rest for this month’s Expert Advice and photo challenge competition, we want you to capture a candid, ‘out of the blue’ fleeting moment. As we all know, the most interesting moments for a photo are more often than not, those that come along unexpectedly.
So, make sure you send in your best shot for the chance to WIN a great prize – as always, the images received will all be judged by a professional photographer who is looking at all aspects, not just the choice of subject matter. So, get out there, get creative and think about your technique – the composition, angle and lighting – and don’t be afraid to play with the settings on your trusty LUMIX G!
With this month’s ‘out of the blue’ theme for the competition, you may well want to seek out scenes that are likely to be full of action, such as busy crowds on your local High Street, your kids playing in the snow, a bird in the moment it takes off, or your pets playing with their favourite toys… the possibilities are endless.
Of course, the challenge can be accepted indoors too! The most important thing is that your entry should be an original image that looks clearly as though the scene was unplanned and natural.
By way of providing the usual selection of images for inspiration, we’ve raided the members’ galleries on the website. So, here are just a few examples of the sort of ‘candid moments’ shots that would match this month’s theme, all taken by your fellow members of the community:
Cycling by the sea, by snappysteve. LUMIX G5, Lens: 14-45, Exposure: 1/125 sec, Aperture: f/14. Focal Length: 45 mm, ISO Speed: 160
Hummingbirds, by mariahiles LUMIX GH4, Lens: 100-300, Exposure: 1/3200 sec, Aperture: f/8. Focal Length: 240 mm, ISO Speed: 1600

For those of you who got a new LUMIX G camera with 4K Photo mode recently, this is the perfect Photo Challenge for you to put that exciting creative function to the test! You can learn all about making the most of it – and find some great examples of 4K photos by other users – here.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a 4K camera, though, as most modern LUMIX G models feature a Continuous Shooting or Burst mode that can capture a sequence of images in rapid succession – perfect for a candid capture. If this sort of shooting is new to you, why not learn all about it through the tutorial information provided on the website? Learn more here
Now, it’s over to you… whatever subject you think best portrays a fleeting moment, get out (or stay in!) and capture it. Give us your best shot by uploading it to enter this month’s Photo Challenge! Please provide us with a little background information to accompany your image and don’t forget that when using 4K Photo, you need to mention this and insert a link to the video itself in your description.
Happy shooting and good luck!
