This church is surrounded by many, small wooden houses which would act as temporary accommodation for parishioners travelling to the town to worship from remote places in northeast Sweden where an overnight stay here was the only option. These days the majority of those original buildings are in private ownership and lived in permanently. This gives the place a special, unspoilt ambience and which it is why it is now a protected UNESCO site.
