I've spent a lot of time in the last month, trying to capture the Red Deer rut at Lyme Park. It's best to get there early or late in the day for any action but many times I've been foiled by the weather and very poor light. I was lucky enough to catch a short spell of nice light at Lyme on this particular morning, before the rain set in. This stag was very vocal and also getting quite excited by the nearby hinds. I haven't seen any major fights - the stags I've seen seem to know when they've met their match and slope off, if confronted. They then hang around waiting for the more dominant stag to pick off a hind and take her off to the woods (the deer sanctuary), before sneaking back behind his back!
