I was in Arona in the Piedmont region of Italy this week. Located on the shore of Lake Maggiore, Arona is primarily a tourist destination. Having recently purchased a Panasonic LUMIX G9 micro four thirds camera for more casual day-to-day photography, this was my first opportunity to take it on a business trip to see how it performs. The G9 compliments the LUMIX S1R full-frame camera that replaces the PENTAX K-1 I was previously shooting with. I have been extremely impressed with Panasonic’s ergonomics; these cameras are a joy to use. I chose this scene because of the wide range of brightness; having exposed for the sky, significant shadow recovery was necessary to achieve a balanced image. While I am certain I would have achieved a better result with the higher dynamic range of the S1R’s full-frame sensor, the RAW files are sufficiently malleable to get a decent result. My only negative finding is where *extreme* levels of shadow recovery are needed there is a magenta tint to recovered shadows. Shot with my LUMIX G9 at ISO200 using the Panasonic Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 at 36mm (72mm full-frame equivalent). The lens was stopped down to f/8, giving an exposure of 1/125th. Developed from RAW using DxO PhotoLab 2 and further processed using DxO Viveza from the NiK collection 2. Final edits performed using Affinity Photo.
