Great textures, John, and I like the square crop.(Or is that a different ratio shot?) The warp and weft of the roots give a 3D effect. The 25mm Leica is a fantatstic lens.
I did crop to 1:1 in post as it suited the subject. I always keep the camera ratio at 4:3 unless I’m specifically shooting material to be displayed on a 16:9 screen. Doing that gives you more options in post when it comes to the final composition; except for 16:9 work as I find it much harder to get everything you want in the shot with a format that wide and shallow unless you compose at the time of capture.
The Summilux does give real 3-D pop in good light – however, in this case the light was pretty dull and flat so I emphasised the recorded depth by point adjusting the Tone Curve (and much else) in Lightroom 4.
