My thanks to Gordon (not for the first time) for putting me straight about this bird. It is in fact a 'common', mature Grey Heron (not a young Great Blue) and native to these shores - though this was the first time I'd actually seen one in full plumage like this. Heron's I've shot in previous years at Carshalton Ponds were much drabber in appearence than this obligeing fellow and on further investigation turn out to have been younger birds of the same species. Maybe some things do improve with age. G3 with 45-200mm lens. More shots from the session once I can process the RAWs - this one is a mildly tweaked JPEG.
