Just an example of the sort of quick and dirty band shots I do. Pubs and clubs are much harder venues to get good pics in than most concerts. Apart from the environmental hazards :); you normally have to get very close to your subject or the shot will be blocked by fans and dancers. This was taken with the kit lens and pop-up flash of the G1. I had taken along a much larger flash unit and the 45-200 lens but in the end niether were required as I had no option but to shoot very close to the subject. I often post-process (as here) to de-emphasise the background and concentrate the eye on the performer. Val herself has been a stalwart of the Croydon rock and blues scene for over twenty years - give her and the band a Google.
