I have looked at both shots many times over; one at a time and side to side and it’s been a tough decision. I think the other one for me just tips the scales. I like the increased sense of distance with the longer foreground. But really, what do I know…? I’ve just started out on this photographic road.
Sarah
Thanks Sarah , i”m not far in front of you 🙂
This was in response to Tris”s criticism ? personal taste ? as i”d already done a few variables of the same image ( rather than PP the other 100″s i”d shot that night 🙂 It just proves that everybody has different likes & dislikes, wether it conforms to certain parameters or not.
Although sometimes we all get tunnel vision and a 2nd or 3rd opinion can make the difference.
I”ll take advice / criticism off anyone……….wether i take any notice is a different matter lol
Cheers Ian
Since you ask Ian….I think I would opt for the first (6×4?) format as I think the foreground rock gives a greater sense of perspective and depth to the image. Not that the 16×9 format is bad by any means.
Thanks for that Andy 🙂 Horses for courses ?
Ian
There’s always more than one way to address any given scene isn’t there 🙂
I like ’em both Ian, in different ways. Perhaps the rock in the other one distracts from the castle slightly, though it does add depth. I think the elements of this one are all working a little more in harmony though and there are a lot of horizontals which come together better in this one, so it edges it for me.
I’m not particularly keen on either if truth be known but the GF liked it lol
Cheers Ian
All you need to know is that your girlfriend is right 😉 😉
LOL Sarah 🙂
Ian
I prefer this one – although I may have dropped the crop down slightly leaving a little less sky.
Not exactly criticism, just personal preference. Great shot either way, I did think the rock in the foreground and the amount of water (in the original shot) did detract from a great image, I also read in a magazine article that you should not present obstacles for your eye to encounter before they get to the main part of your image, and that has stuck with me (for good or bad)
Id love to get the chance to shoot this.
Tris.
Good grief Tris, you”re a hard man to please 🙂 i”ll end up like a letterbox at this rate lol
Off back up in June & July if you wanna meet up with your proper camera, bit of Puffin chasing & Landscape stuff 🙂
Cheers Ian
The fact that the castle is well lit means that my eye was immediately drawn to it as the main focus of the shot. I then ‘explored’ the rest of the scene at leisure. Result? A most pleasurable experience, Ian, well done!
I’m not going to get drawn into any arguments over ‘Basic, Better, Best’ (apologies to ‘Antiques Road Show’!). The thing, Ian, is to treat each photo as your best offering of its genre, and leave it at that.
No fretting allowed!
Thanks Ray, glad you enjoyed it 🙂 always trying to please-that”s me lol
I”m out of touch with Pana”s, which i”ve only just started thinking about properly recently, being stuck in the 4:3 world 🙂
A good excuse to shoot to revisit places and shoot 16:9 instead of cropping stored images 🙂
Cheers ian
