Judge's Comments

  1. A usual rule of ball-sport photography is that you capture the ball in the picture so people can see what’s going on. I can’t really even tell you how many players are in this ball-sport picture, let alone see the ball. And I like that about it very much. Francesco’s picture has a beautiful atmosphere that’s conveyed not only though the motion he has captured but also through his use of muted colours and his composition. It isn’t a picture of the ball, the ball carrier or even the players themselves, but of the drive, collision, pace and crunching blur of those moments in rugby when bodies crash together. At those moments time seems to accelerate as thousands of tiny movements happen in the same instant. This is an astonishing picture and a worthy winner of this round.
