  1. No one could say they didn’t notice the shadows in this shot. Boy, they are powerful! I love a good long colonnade as they very often offer lots of interesting light – even on an overcast day. Here we get to see the possibilities when the sun is out and aiming in the right direction. I think this shot would have been a strong contender had the girl not come along, but with her in it we get that extra element that makes the viewer say ‘wow’ out loud. That contrast of matching patterns running at different angles creates an effect we can’t not look at, and makes us wonder at the very good fortune of the photographer. Luck plays a big part in all pictures, and it pays to wait for it to happen. A cracking shot.

Thanks. Originally shot in colour but the strong harsh light and dark shadows makes for a punchy black and white conversion. There wasn’t much in the way of colour in the scene anyway apart from the sandstone colour of the the columns and pavement. The shadows were very dark and the highlights very bright. It helps that the all the clothing are black and white so it didn’t take too much imagination to see the potential black and white conversion possibilities.

I thought it would either be your great photo or Eddy’s to win this months comp. Beautiful image.

Excellent shot, and I bet the judges had a tough call between yours and Eddy’s winning shot. A very worthy second place.

Sorry, make that a very worthy, and somewhat unlucky third place! Freudian error…..I forgot I wasn’t actually judging the competition.
