  1. Why ever would you shoot something in black and white that is famous for its colour? You’d need to be crazy, surely, or someone looking for a different way to present a subject we’ve all seen many times before. And this certainly is a very different take on a picture of a ladybird. It really works well as it draws our attention - not only because it is different but because the treatment suits the subject. Simon’s lighting shows us how hard the shell over the ladybird’s wings is, and we get to see just how armoured both body and head are. I love the reflection too and the dark background that lifts the highlights on the insect and emphasises the three-dimensional qualities of the picture. We get to see the parts that are usually hidden beneath the body too – the silhouettes of the feet, toes and hairy legs. That on-a-level angle pays off as it reveals all that detail and makes the ladybird seem huge at the same time. A very nicely thought-out shot. Well done Simon.
