  1. It’s almost impossible not to award this picture the top prize as so much effort and thought has gone in to it. Creating a still life is very different to photographing something the way we found it, as we have to take control of every element of the picture. Here the mince pies have been carefully placed, filled a little more, bitten in to and then lit, while the objects and lights in the background have been considered and placed. Things can’t be left to chance, as whatever is in the picture is there because the photographer chose to include it. I have to declare a very soft spot for mince pies, but I hope I can reassure you that the picture has won for its photographic qualities rather than my memory of the taste of the content. I like the balance of the composition, the choice of props and the lighting that emphasises the texture of the pastry and the mince meat. The colours in the background work really well too, as they gently suggest the festive season without shouting ‘CHRISTMAS’ out loud. Well done, time and effort well spent.
